How Long Is the Te Anau Glowworm Caves Tour?

The Te Anau Glowworm Caves tour takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, plus 30 minutes' check-in: the lake crossing, Cavern House, the cave walk and the grotto, step by step (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

The Te Anau Glowworm Caves tour takes about 2 hours 15 minutes from the lakefront and back, and you check in 30 minutes before, so plan on about 2 hours 45 minutes in all. RealNZ puts the part inside the cave, the walk and the boat into the grotto, at about 45 minutes; the rest is the crossing both ways and Cavern House. It is from US$73 a person (checked October 2026), with departures by day and in the evening.

The tour, step by step

Map of Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri in Fiordland, with Te Anau town and the RealNZ Visitor Centre on the south-eastern shore, the boat route crossing the lake northwards, and the Te Anau Glowworm Caves at Cavern House on the western shore; the bird sanctuary just south of town and Manapouri further south
From the wharf on Lakefront Drive to Cavern House on the western shore and back: the crossing is about 15 km each way.
  1. Check-in, 30 minutes before. At the RealNZ Visitor Centre, 85 Lakefront Drive, Te Anau, for the departure you pick in the calendar above. Check-in closes 5 minutes before.
  2. The crossing. A catamaran takes you across Lake Te Anau to the western shore, about 15 km on the water.
  3. Cavern House. At the cave entrance, displays explain the caves’ geology and history before the group goes in. There is tea and coffee here, and a short optional forest walk where a guide points out the plants.
  4. The walk underground. Your guide leads a group of up to 12 through the passages, past whirlpools and an underground waterfall, with some bending at the low entrance and steps throughout.
  5. The grotto. You board a small boat, and the guide pulls it into the grotto in darkness and silence, under the glowworms.
  6. Back out and home. The walk back to Cavern House, then the cruise to the lakefront in town.

GetYourGuide lists 135 minutes; RealNZ’s own pages say both “around two hours” and “2.5 hours”, so plan on about two and a quarter hours wharf to wharf and treat two and a half as the safe figure.

Fitting it into a Fiordland day

Because the tour starts and ends in the middle of Te Anau, it fits around the long days. The Milford Sound coach tours from Te Anau run about seven and a half to eight hours, and the Doubtful Sound day about eight and a half, so the caves go on the evening of a fiord day, or the morning or evening of the day you arrive. The caves and Milford Sound lays out the combinations.

Getting to check-in on time

Inside, the cave stays at 8 to 12°C all year, so bring a warm layer and a waterproof jacket whatever the season. The part to plan is reaching the lakefront for check-in. From Queenstown the drive to Te Anau takes about 2 hours 45 minutes by car or coach, and from Manapouri about 30 minutes, so if you are driving in on the day, book a departure that leaves room for the road. Getting there from Queenstown covers it.
