Te Anau Glowworm Caves from Queenstown
Seeing the Te Anau Glowworm Caves from Queenstown: about 2 h 45 min each way by car or coach, no GetYourGuide day trip that includes them (Oct 2026), and why a night in Te Anau works best.
You can see the Te Anau Glowworm Caves from Queenstown in a day, but it is a long one: Te Anau is about 2 hours 45 minutes away by car or coach, each way, and the caves tour itself takes about 2 hours 15 minutes from the Te Anau lakefront. GetYourGuide sells no Queenstown day trip that includes the caves (October 2026), so the usual way is to drive or take the coach to Te Anau and book the caves tour, from US$73 a person (checked October 2026), for when you arrive.

Three ways to do it

Drive and stay the night. The easiest plan. Drive to Te Anau, take an afternoon or evening caves departure, sleep in town, and either drive back or carry on to Milford Sound the next morning. You arrive at check-in rested, and the evening departures, which can cross or return in the dusk, fit around a day on the road.
Drive there and back in a day. Possible, at roughly five and a half hours of driving around a tour of 2 hours 15 minutes plus the 30-minute check-in. Book a departure that leaves room for the road in both directions.
Go by coach. The Milford Sound coach tours from Queenstown pass through Te Anau, but they do not stop for the caves. To use a coach for the caves, travel to Te Anau one day, stay, and return the next.
Make it two days: the caves and Milford Sound
Queenstown to Milford Sound and back by coach is a 12-hour day, and Te Anau sits on the way. Splitting it, with a night in Te Anau, gives you the caves on the first evening and the fiord the next morning, from the same lakefront centre in Te Anau where the caves boat leaves. Beyond Te Anau the Milford Road (SH94) and the Homer Tunnel can close for snow and avalanche control; NZTA’s journey planner has the current status.
Pick by where you want to sleep:

Pure Milford's coach and cruise, with pickup in central Queenstown or Te Anau; no caves stop.

Staying in Te Anau
Te Anau is the closest town to Milford Sound and the place most people break the drive. The caves boat leaves from its lakefront, so a bed in the town centre keeps check-in close.
| Plan | Driving | Caves | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive, stay the night | About 2 h 45 min each way, on two days | Any departure | Most visitors |
| Drive there and back in a day | About 5 h 30 min in total | One that leaves room for the road | A tight schedule |
| Night in Te Anau, Milford next day | Coach from Te Anau | The evening before | Seeing both |
