Best Time to Visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves
The best time to visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves: any departure shows the glowworms, so choose by season, light and crowds. Evening tours, summer, winter and after rain (Oct 2026).
There is no bad time of day for the Te Anau Glowworm Caves: the grotto is always dark, so the glowworms show on every departure, all year. What the time changes is the trip around them. An evening departure crosses or returns over Lake Te Anau in the dusk, which suits a day spent at Milford Sound; summer, December to February, is the busiest season, and winter, especially June and July, is quieter with a dense display. The tour is from US$73 a person (checked October 2026).

Day or evening?

Daytime departures suit families with young children and anyone fitting the caves into a day in Te Anau, or arriving from Queenstown in the morning. You see the lake and the mountains on both crossings.
Evening departures suit a day on the road or the fiord: back from Milford Sound, a meal, then the caves. Daylight hours in New Zealand change a lot through the year, so on an evening tour the crossing out or back may be in the dark, which gives the trip its own atmosphere. Inside the cave it makes no difference. RealNZ publishes no fixed timetable: its booking calendar shows the departures and how many run on your date.
By season
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | December to February | The busiest weeks, and the longest evenings, so an evening crossing may still be in daylight. Book ahead |
| Winter | June to August | Quieter, with easier last-minute places; early winter, June and July, is an active time for the larvae, with a dense display. Shorter days, so evening crossings are in the dark |
| Spring and autumn | March to May, September to November | Between the two: the glowworms show on every departure, and booking ahead is still worthwhile |

The cave stays at 8 to 12°C whatever the season, so the clothing advice is the same all year: a warm fleece or sweater, a waterproof jacket and non-slip shoes, with sunscreen, and insect repellent for Fiordland’s sandflies.
After heavy rain
Rain makes the stream inside louder and the entrance more dramatic, and guests write about the roar of the water after a wet day. Very heavy rain is different: when the caves flood, departures are cancelled, as some guests have found in the newest reviews. If your dates are fixed, book with free cancellation, which the tour offers up to 24 hours before, and keep a spare evening in Te Anau if you can.
