The Guide
Across the Lake and Under It: The Glowworm Caves Explained
One company takes visitors into these caves, on one kind of tour. What you choose is the departure, and what else you do in Fiordland around it. Here is how the trip works and how to plan it.
The Te Anau Glowworm Caves are on the western shore of Lake Te Anau, and the only way in is RealNZ’s guided tour: a catamaran across the lake, a walk through young, water-carved passages past whirlpools and an underground waterfall, then a small boat into a dark, silent grotto lit by thousands of glowworms. It takes about 2 hours 15 minutes from the wharf on Lakefront Drive, from US$73 a person, rated 4.7 from 3,166 reviews (checked October 2026). The calendar for it is on this page.

How the tour works
There is no road to the caves. Everything starts at the RealNZ Visitor Centre, 85 Lakefront Drive, Te Anau: you check in there 30 minutes before your departure (check-in closes 5 minutes before), then board a catamaran for the crossing to the western shore. There is no hotel pickup, so walk or drive to the lakefront, in the centre of town.
At Cavern House, the building at the cave entrance, displays explain how the caves formed and were found before your guide takes a group of no more than 12 underground. The caves are about 12,000 years old, young enough that the river running through them is still carving them, so the walk is loud with water: twisting passages, whirlpools and a waterfall falling through the rock. The entrance is low, so you bend to get in, and there are steps and wet walkways throughout.
Beyond the noise of the water, you step into a small boat. The guide pulls it into the grotto in complete darkness and asks for silence, and the ceiling comes alive with points of blue-green light. Then the walk back out, tea or coffee at Cavern House, and the cruise home. How long the tour takes has the timings step by step.
Two rules worth knowing before you book
No photos or video inside the cave. Light disturbs the glowworms and stops everyone’s eyes adjusting to the dark, so phones and cameras stay away underground. The lake crossing and Cavern House are fine.
A silent section in the grotto. Everyone keeps quiet for the boat ride under the glowworms. Children are welcome, but the silence can be hard for young ones, and the tour is not suitable for infants or for wheelchair users. Is it worth it? goes through who it suits and who it does not.
Tickets and price
The tour is from US$73 a person on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026), with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and RealNZ’s own site starts it from NZD 154 (October 2026). Both are “from” prices that move by date and departure, so compare the total for your day at checkout. The price covers the return cruise, the guided cave tour and the tea and coffee; snacks are sold at Cavern House and on the boat. The tickets guide sets out what you pay and what changes it.
Which departure, and what to pair it with
The glowworms glow on every departure, because the grotto is always dark; what changes is the light on the lake. On an evening departure you may cross or return in the dusk, which suits a day spent driving to Milford Sound. The best time to visit covers seasons, evenings and the busy summer weeks.

Most visitors fit the caves around a fiord day: the caves the evening before or after Milford Sound, with a night in Te Anau. The caves and Milford Sound shows how the two days fit together, and getting there from Queenstown covers the drive and the coach.
How the caves were found
The caves’ Māori name, Te Ana-au, is usually translated as the cave of swirling water, and the caves themselves lived on in tradition long before anyone mapped them. In 1948, after a three-year search, Lawson Burrows found the way in: he had noticed water disappearing into the hills and coming back out at the lake, and he dived under the lake’s edge to surface inside the cave. Tourism began soon after.
What you see is a small part of the Aurora system, which runs for about 6.7 km on four levels; about 200 metres of it is open to visitors. The glowworms are the larvae of a fungus gnat, Arachnocampa luminosa, found only in New Zealand. Each one hangs sticky threads from the ceiling and glows to lure insects into them, and a hungrier larva glows brighter.
If Waitomo, in the North Island, is also on your list, Te Anau vs Waitomo compares the two caves, the prices and the experience.
Staying in Te Anau
The caves boat leaves from the town’s lakefront, and an overnight in Te Anau is what makes an evening departure and a Milford Sound day work together.

How these facts were checked
Written 29 October 2026. Tour prices, ratings, review counts, lengths and inclusions are from the GetYourGuide listings, read in US dollars on 29 October 2026. The departure point, check-in times, group size, what to bring, the photography rule, the silent section, the NZD price and the caves’ age are from RealNZ’s Te Anau Glowworm Caves page, the Milford coach’s departure point from RealNZ’s Milford Sound day trip page, and the discovery, the Aurora system and the glowworms from RealNZ’s own articles on the caves, all read in October 2026. The boat route is measured on the map.

Te Anau Glowworm Caves FAQ
The questions people ask before the Te Anau Glowworm Caves tour, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
The caves tour is from US$73 a person on GetYourGuide and from NZD 154 on RealNZ's own site (October 2026). A ticket is a place on the guided tour, the only way into the caves: the return cruise across Lake Te Anau, the guided cave walk, the boat into the glowworm grotto, and tea and coffee. Both are 'from' prices that change by date and departure. The tickets guide has the detail.
About 2 hours 15 minutes from the lakefront in Te Anau and back, plus check-in 30 minutes before. The time inside the cave, the walk and the boat into the grotto, is about 45 minutes; the rest is the lake crossing both ways and the displays at Cavern House. The tour, step by step.
No: the caves are on the far shore of Lake Te Anau and can only be visited on RealNZ's paid guided tour, which holds the only concession to take visitors inside. There is no walk-in route. Wild glowworms can be seen free on damp forest banks around New Zealand at night, but not the grotto, the river or the boat.
You can drive to Te Anau, but not to the caves: there is no road, and the tour reaches them by catamaran across the lake. Park in town and check in at the RealNZ Visitor Centre, 85 Lakefront Drive, 30 minutes before your departure. From Queenstown the drive to Te Anau is about 2 hours 45 minutes. Getting there from Queenstown.
No: photography and video are not allowed inside the cave. Light disturbs the glowworms and stops everyone's eyes adjusting to the dark. Photos are fine on the lake crossing and at Cavern House.
Children are welcome, but the tour is not suitable for infants, and everyone must stay completely silent in the grotto for a while. The cave entrance is low and there are steps and wet walkways throughout. A child who is steady on their feet and happy in the dark and the quiet is the right fit. Who the tour suits.
Yes for most visitors spending a night in Te Anau: the lake crossing, a cave still being carved by its river and a silent boat ride under the glowworms, rated 4.7 from 3,166 reviews (October 2026). It is less worth it on a rushed day, with a toddler, or if bending and steps are hard. An honest look.
Neither: both show the same glowworm, so choose by island, Te Anau in the South Island's Fiordland, Waitomo in the North Island. Te Anau is a lake crossing, a young river cave and a small grotto in about 2 hours 15 minutes; Waitomo's main tour is a 45-minute walk and boat ride in a cave you reach by road, NZD 85 for an adult (October 2026). Te Anau vs Waitomo.
Any departure: the grotto is always dark, so the glowworms show day or evening, all year. Evening departures suit a day at Milford Sound; summer, December to February, is the busiest; early winter, June and July, is quieter with a dense display. The best time to go.
Yes from Te Anau, if you take an early Milford coach and an evening caves departure, but two days with a night in Te Anau is easier. RealNZ's Milford coaches leave the same lakefront centre at 7.45am to 10.50am, and the day takes about 7.5 hours. From Queenstown, the Milford day alone is about 12 hours. Planning both.
A warm fleece or sweater, a waterproof jacket and non-slip shoes: the cave stays at 8 to 12°C all year and the walkways are often wet. No heeled shoes. Bring insect repellent for the sandflies Fiordland is known for, and sunscreen for the lake, and any personal medication, including for asthma or allergies.
